A Second Chance at Learning is committed to providing a customized comprehensive interactive educational curriculum that addresses the whole person. The whole person includes life skills, educational skills and technological skill sets to increase the literacy of each individual.
A Second Chance at Learning offers an out of the box non- traditional educational curriculum to neighborhood associations, churches, community outreach, volunteer organizations, government, and other organizations. The on-line virtual school fosters a second chance at learning for at-risk youth, teenagers, ex-offenders and adults that face the day-to-day battle of survival in an ever-increasing technological world. Technological advancements in curriculum content delivery is designed to reach individuals who have been either left out or left behind, but still have a desire to learn.
These are trying times in our neighborhoods. Crime is at an all time high, economic opportunities are being crippled, jobs are being eliminated, the cost of living keeps rising, schools are failing, the at risk community is increasing, and most of the answers to these issues start with literacy and education. It is with the thought that increasing literacy in our communities that we can have a positive effect on the reduction of the above-mentioned issues. When we think of the fundamental challenges of the individuals that face the uphill battle against all of these issues, we come to realize that we have to change their level of literacy. Those of us who have an education need more education while those of us who have no education need to attain one. There is a need to increase a level of literarcy that fosters a sense of "can do" instead of "cannot do". In partnership with law enforcement, neighborhood associations, churches, community outreach and school districts, we must come together and implement a change that we can all believe in.
A Second Chance for Anyone
Individuals and organizations can access our on-line virtual school. We designed this flexibility because many of us need a second chance to learn something. Perhaps you just need help in one subject to progress to the next grade or start college. Or maybe you need a more comprehensive learning plan.
The ASCAL format is easy to use by individuals, schools, community colleges, neighborhood associations, churches, community outreach and volunteer organizations, government programs, and other organizations who service all of us who need another chance.
Where do I start?
So you’re not sure what level to begin your second chance. No problem. Easy on-line testing will provide that information. “No”, you say “I really need a lot of help” and sitting in a classroom has not worked for me. This is for you for whether you are a child, a young adult, an adult or reentering the workforce at any age and any education level.
Everyone Needs Lifelong Learning!
The average person will change careers many times before retiring. A job for life no longer exists. The flexibility to keep learning, relearning, and changing work places is based on a strong education that includes math and computers, as well as strong social skills. This combination of skills builds a “can do” attitude.
So why do you need another chance? “I did not do well in school.” “I did OK, but it was long time ago.” “My schools were not very good.” “I have a criminal record.” “There is one subject that is really difficult for me.” “My goal is a better job.” The reason does not matter. Make a commitment to life-long learning to be prepared for the many chances you will have to change and grow, as the world and your circumstances change.
The Community Initiative
An inadequate education directly increases the risk of crime. We meet the challenge of educating at-risk youth, teenagers, adults and ex-offenders re-entering the community. There are several ways we add value to government programs, schools, community organizations, law enforcement programs and others that provide a safe haven and educational opportunity as a crime deterrent.
ASCAL’s individualized learning paths eliminate being embarrassed in a classroom setting and are targeted to help individuals achieve their goals. The customized curriculum, resources and lesson plans raise proficiency at least one letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) and most students are able to achieve a minimum of a C.
Online learning encourages familiarity with computer use, a skill that is needed for any career, and the time the student is in the online classroom can be monitored. While online learning provides the content of traditional education and can also include an instructor, it enhances learning by using both the audio and visual senses which is more engaging for the student.
Experts agree that people or interpersonal skills are a major predictor of success. ASCAL includes a curriculum to increase social awareness, social etiquette and self-esteem needed to make positive choices.
Entrepreneurial training encourages small business development and self-employment and original, culturally-diverse content teaches situational appropriateness in a global society.
The green curriculum teaches living a "green" lifestyle in the urban community and skills needed for green-collar employment.
